Robert and Jamie Soros share a passion for collecting contemporary art and supporting artists and institutions. Robert developed his love for contemporary art through frequent visit art galleries and museums in New York and began acquiring work by living artists in his 20s. In the 30 years since, Soros has built a significant collection of postwar European and American art that includes the likes of such mid-career and established artists like Martin Kippenberger, Sigmar Polke, Rosemarie Trockel, Robert Morris, and Richard Serra.

Jamie, the daughter of an artist, grew up immersed in the art world of Soho during the 1980s, and she has said she developed a strong preference for conceptual art from a young age. Jamie and Robert met in 2014, and together they have focused on supporting emerging artists. Recent acquisitions include works by Walter Price, Tiona Nekkia McClodden, Carol Bove, Simone Leigh, Anicka Yi, and Jacqueline Humphries.

One of the first artists that attracted Robert’s attention was the late L.A.-based artist Mike Kelley. Soros, who owns several works by the artist, told ARTnews that he was drawn to Kelley’s unique conceptual and confrontational nature, which often resulted in massive all-over sculptural installations. “I’ve always been attracted to artists who follow their maniacal pursuit of ideas and process,” he said of the artist who first piqued his interest in art.

Robert is the son Hungarian-American investor and philanthropist George Soros, who ranks among the richest men in the world with a fortune estimated at some $6.7 billion, as of October 2023, according to Forbes, and who has given away $32 billion of a personal fortune since 1984.

Jamie and Robert, who is chairman and chief investment officer of Soros Capital, a family office established in 2018, have followed in George’s footsteps in terms of giving back through supporting numerous cultural institutions. Jamie sits on the board of New Museum in New York, the Women’s Council of the Dia Art Foundation, and the Modern and Contemporary Visiting Committee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Robert serves on the boards of the Brooklyn Museum, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, The Kitchen in New York, and MoMA PS1 in Queens.
